John was very encouraging and checked many of my early compositions. Of course, this was long before computers came into general use.  Edgar Shepherd and Shirley Burton were also very encouraging.  Perhaps, on looking back at some of my early efforts they were tactful as well!  Later on Tim Pett, Bob Hardy and Peter Mackley checked and commented on my compositions.  I am very grateful to all of them and to those conductors who decided to call my compositions.
